This book, originally written in German in 1511, was the first printed treatise on musical instruments in the West. In provides basic explanations for playing keyboards, lute and recorder, and also discusses how different stringed and wind instruments are categorised. Written in a popular style, it is readable and interesting. The English translation is both highly scholarly and very accessible. Includes facsimiles of all of the original woodcut illustrations.
