The Highland Pipe and Scottish Society
Birlinn Pbk, 2013 (reprint from 2000)
Don't be put off by the cover picture of a piper, or by the way the title puts “The Highland Pipe” in much bigger type than “Scottish Society 1750-1950”, because the book really is about the social and cultural changes that happened from the 18th century to the mid 20th century. The book provides a masterly and very readable overview of why music publishing, performance and transmission changed in the ways it did, and traces the powerful influences from wider society on traditional music-making. I would say this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the old Gaelic music.
