Peter Downey
Edward Bunting and the ancient Irish music: the publication history of ‘a general collection of the ancient Irish music... adapted for the piano-forte’ (London: Preston and son)
Downey Editions, 2017
Peter Downey's book is a fascinating but very hard to find study of the publication history of Bunting's first printed collection of tunes. Downey convincingly demonstrates that Bunting's first book was published in 1797, not as usually stated, 1796. He also discusses the different "unauthorised" editions that were made - this is very useful, as it means that if you come across a copy of Bunting's 1st book, you can work out when it was printed and by who. There is also a chapter on the 1809 volume, and another chapter on Bunting's use of earlier printed books as sources for his published tunes. 72 pages, A4 format, home-made binding with clear front cover, full colour throughout, many facsimile illustrations. Highly recommended, and very good value.

Edward Bunting
General Collection of The Ancient Music of Ireland
Linen Hall Library facsimile reprint, 2012
This elegant hardback facsimile reprint is of Bunting's second collection, originally published in 1809. For this reprint, the Linen Hall Library in Belfast has selected a copy of the 1811 re-issue from their collections. The book is presented as a high quality crafted hardback, with quarter-cloth binding. The large format of the book copies the size of the original, with pages 36cm tall. It is numbered 30 out of an edition of only 225 copies. I have one secondhand copy available for sale, in overall very good condition, a couple of light marks on the front cover, and the whole book slightly bowed (as is usual for craft-made hardbacks of this style).

Edward Bunting
General Collection of The Ancient Music of Ireland
Available for sale is a first edition copy of Bunting's 1809 book which includes the fragile original printed card covers, which include the title, and the date. These original covers are fairly rare since often they would have been removed, and replaced with a more solid leather binding. The copy I have is in reasonable condition, though the binding has come apart a bit, and has been repaired with black cloth glued down the spine. The book is complete, including the tissue guards on all the plates. There is a fair bit of foxing on the paper, and on the music plates, the ink is showing as a brown discolouration on the other side of the pages. But it is a lovely, complete copy. It also includes some typewritten sheets, on French headed paper, with the song words, presumably as used by a singer.

Edward Bunting
The Ancient Music of Ireland
(James Sherwin's annotated copy)
A unique annotated copy of Bunting's 1840 volume. This is a nice clean tight copy of Bunting's 1840 Ancient Music of Ireland, with the spine professionally repaired with green cloth. It is missing the plates of the Trinity College harp, but is otherwise complete and in very good condition.
This copy includes the pencil annotation about Patrick Langan, "a pupil of Hempson", and other annotations by James Sherwin. It also includes the amazing inserted watercolour artwork showing a harp with broken strings and Irish calligraphy. This is a unique copy of this important title, with an astonishing connection back to Denis O'Hampsey. For a commentary and description of the annotations, see my blog post.
