Newly published by the National Museum of Scotland is Hugh Cheape's book Bagpipes. Whether you love or hate the sound of them, it must be recognised that in Ireland as well as in Scotland they took on some of the elements of the dying Gaelic harp traditions in the 18th century, and Hugh is unusual amongst piping scholars in mentioning this. His book is a superb, balanced and accessible account of the development of the different bagpipe traditions in Scotland including the "Union pipes" which continue to be played in Ireland today, known as the "Uillean pipes". The book also contains a CD-ROM with PDFs, photos and sound clips from the Museum's collections. Highly recommended.
There will be an Emporium stand at Scoil na gClársach, Kilkenny, 20th - 26th Aug 2008.
